Asghar Farhadi's 'Parallel Tales' is a disappointing entry in his filmography, a meandering and convoluted French melodrama that fails to live up to the director's previous acclaim. The film, inspired by Krzysztof Kieślowski's 'A Short Film About Love', is a nearly two-and-a-half-hour affair that feels stuck in another era of French cinema, with a leaden plot and a lack of emotional resonance. The story revolves around Isabelle Huppert's character, Sylvie, an author who uses her neighbors as inspiration for her latest novel. She hires a young man, Adam (Adam Bessa), to be her assistant, but his naive nature leads him to believe the story is real, causing him to spy on Nita (Virginie Efira), with whom he becomes infatuated. The film's convoluted storyline and poor pacing make it a dull and unengaging watch, despite the participation of some of France's best actors, including Huppert, Cassel, and Pierre Niney.
