Beware of the Imposters!
In a shocking turn of events, the West Kelowna RCMP is alerting the public about a sophisticated scam that's taking impersonation to a whole new level.
Imagine this: you receive a call, and the caller ID shows it's from the West Kelowna RCMP. You answer, and on the other end, you see people dressed as police officers, trying to convince you of their legitimacy. But here's the catch - it's all a carefully crafted ruse!
"This scam is incredibly elaborate and convincing," Const. Ash Puri warns. "The RCMP would never ask for sensitive information or money over the phone or video chat."
So, how does this scam work? The perpetrators use caller ID spoofing, making it seem like the calls are coming directly from the West Kelowna RCMP. Once victims join the video call, the scammers try to extract personal and financial details, which could later be used for extortion.
But here's where it gets controversial: the RCMP has a strict policy against conducting official business through video-chat platforms like Zoom or FaceTime. So, why are these imposters using such methods?
The public is advised to never provide personal or financial information over the phone, especially if the caller claims to be from the RCMP. Instead, hang up and independently look up your local detachment's number to verify the call's authenticity.
The West Kelowna RCMP is now actively investigating this matter and has opened a centralized file to track down the perpetrators. Both victims who reported the spoofing calls have been advised to contact their local police agencies.
Stay vigilant, and remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Always verify the identity of the caller before sharing any sensitive information.
