A shoulder injury has dealt a significant blow to the Toronto Blue Jays' 2025 season, with outfielder Anthony Santander facing a lengthy recovery. This news comes as a bitter pill to swallow, especially considering Santander's impressive performance with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, where he smashed 44 home runs and drove in an impressive 102 RBIs.
Manager John Schneider announced the news at spring training, revealing that Santander will undergo labrum surgery on his left shoulder, with an expected recovery time of five to six months. This setback is particularly frustrating given Santander's struggles at the plate during his injury-marred debut with the Blue Jays last season, after signing a lucrative $92.5 million, five-year contract during the off-season.
Schneider explained, "We tried everything to avoid this, but when he started hitting more in January, we noticed an issue and had him checked out."
But the bad news didn't stop there for the Blue Jays. Right-hander Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, is also facing a setback due to forearm fatigue and won't be ready for opening day. Schneider emphasized the team's cautious approach with Bieber, expecting him to make a significant impact later in the season. Bieber, who was acquired from Cleveland last year, pitched admirably during his limited appearances, helping the Blue Jays reach the brink of a World Series championship.
"After discussing with him and our medical team, we decided this was the best course of action, especially given his workload in the postseason," Schneider added.
Adding to the Blue Jays' woes, right-hander Bowden Francis will miss the entire season after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery.
These injuries have undoubtedly shaken up the Blue Jays' plans for the upcoming season, but how will they adapt and overcome? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the road to recovery is a long and challenging journey.
