Akshay Bhatia's Stellar Birdie Barrage Propels Him to a Commanding Lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am!
Get ready for some serious golf drama! Young American Akshay Bhatia has rocketed to the top of the leaderboard at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, holding a two-shot advantage after a thrilling third round. But here's where it gets interesting: his incredible run of birdies wasn't enough to completely shake off a charging Collin Morikawa, who is now firmly in contention for his first win in nearly two and a half years!
Bhatia, who began the day tied for the lead at 15 under with Japan's Ryo Hisatsune, unleashed a phenomenal streak of six birdies in his first seven holes. This explosive start built him a lead that, at one point, stretched to an impressive five shots! Imagine the pressure on the greens, especially with the blustery conditions whipping through California. Despite a late bogey on the 17th that trimmed his lead to two, Bhatia managed a 68, bringing his total to a remarkable 19 under. The final green even saw a bit of a slowdown due to the gusts, and a missed putt for birdie there was the final punctuation mark on his round.
And this is the part most people miss: while Bhatia was soaring, Collin Morikawa was quietly, and then not-so-quietly, making his move. His spectacular 10-under-par round of 62 has propelled him into second place at 17 under. That's the kind of performance that can steal a tournament right from under your nose!
Adding to the excitement, another American, Jake Knapp, has also climbed into a joint-second position at 17 under thanks to a fantastic 66. His round included a stunning eagle on the final hole, mirroring his earlier eagle on the first! And rounding out the trio at the top, Austrian Sepp Straka is right there with them, carding a 67 to also sit at 17 under.
Now, for the defending champion, Rory McIlroy. He started the day six shots back and, despite a promising start with two birdies in the first three holes, he unfortunately fell further behind. A costly three-over-par seven on the fourth hole and a double bogey on the very last hole saw him shoot an even-par 72, leaving him 10 shots off the lead. Ouch!
Looking ahead to Sunday, the weather forecast is calling for heavy rain and strong winds. This has led tournament organizers to move the start times for the final round forward. Play will now commence from 07:22 to 09:45 local time, with players teeing off in threesomes from split tees. This could certainly add another layer of challenge and unpredictability to an already gripping conclusion!
What do you think? Was Bhatia's lead truly unassailable, or is Morikawa's incredible round a sign of a major comeback? And how will the challenging weather impact the final outcome? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your predictions!
