Nottingham Forest's Europa League Journey: A Tale of Two Halves
In a thrilling encounter, Nottingham Forest emerged victorious from their Europa League knockout play-off tie against Fenerbahce, securing their place in the last 16 despite a nail-biting second leg. The game, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Forest at the City Ground, showcased the team's resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
But here's where it gets controversial... Vitor Pereira, the Forest manager, made some bold team rotation decisions, having won the first leg comfortably in Istanbul. However, the performance gap between the two legs was astonishing.
Forest created their own challenges, making a seemingly straightforward task incredibly challenging. In the 22nd minute, Fenerbahce's break saw Kerem Akturkoglu score, giving the visitors a much-needed boost. This goal gave Fenerbahce a real sense of confidence, and they created several chances to level the tie in the first half.
And this is the part most people miss... Forest players had to dodge fireworks thrown onto the pitch by Fenerbahce fans! A three-minute delay occurred as the away end launched fireworks into the Forest penalty area. It was a chaotic start to the match, with players having to take evasive action.
As the first half progressed, Forest struggled with turnovers and lost duels. Pereira made four half-time changes, a decision he later described as 'difficult'.
Seconds into the second half, Fenerbahce were awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge by Jair Cunha. Akturkoglu stepped up and scored his second of the night, giving the Turkish side hope of an aggregate comeback.
But Forest's substitutes made a significant impact, and the team soon found their rhythm. Despite the careful possession approach, the home fans remained nervous. As the whistles of discontent grew, Forest responded.
Two substitutes combined beautifully, with Ola Aina's cross finding Callum Hudson-Odoi, who then hammered home his first European goal of the season. The relief was palpable, and Forest's place in the last 16 was sealed.
Forest will now face either Real Betis or FC Midtjylland in the next round. Pereira admitted having one eye on the upcoming Brighton game, a decision that may have impacted the team's performance.
Hudson-Odoi reflected on the game, acknowledging that Forest made it difficult for themselves. He emphasized the team's reaction after conceding the second goal and their determination to score, which ultimately secured their progression.
Despite reaching the Europa League last 16, Forest have suffered two home defeats in a single major European season for the first time. Fenerbahce, on the other hand, registered only their second European away win in England.
The Europa League schedule is as follows:
- Round of 16 draw: 27 February, 12 pm

- Quarter-finals: 9 & 16 April 2026
