A major shakeup is coming to the world of luxury retail, with a significant round of store closures announced for Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. This news has sent shockwaves through the industry, leaving many wondering about the future of these iconic brands.
The Beginning of a New Chapter
Saks Global, in its initial wave of luxury store closures, revealed on Tuesday that eight Saks Fifth Avenue stores and one Neiman Marcus location will be shutting their doors later this year. This is just the beginning, as part of a larger restructuring effort during the company's Chapter 11 reorganization.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The closures are being framed as an "initial phase of optimization" by Saks Global, suggesting more changes are on the horizon. With 33 Saks Fifth Avenue stores, 36 Neiman Marcus stores, and two Bergdorf Goodman locations, the question arises: how many more stores will be affected, and what does this mean for the future of these brands?
The Impact of the Closures
The eight Saks Fifth Avenue stores closing are located in various cities across the US, including Birmingham, Columbus, East Rutherford, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Richmond, and Tulsa. Additionally, the Neiman Marcus store in Boston is also facing closure.

The Fifth Avenue Club strategy, originally designed to serve markets without a physical Saks Fifth Avenue presence, is also being scaled back. With the $2.7 billion acquisition of NMG by Saks Global in 2024, the company now has the ability to serve customers in many of these markets through the Neiman Marcus store portfolio. Only two standalone Fifth Avenue Clubs will remain open, with a potential third opening in Palm Beach.
A New Vision for Luxury Retail
Geoffroy van Raemdonck, CEO of Saks Global, stated that these actions are aimed at reinforcing Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman as ultimate luxury destinations, offering a seamless multi-channel shopping experience. By optimizing their operational footprint, the company aims to deliver exceptional products, elevated experiences, and personalized service across all channels.
However, the speculation doesn't stop there. It's believed that a total of around 20 Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus stores could ultimately shut down. Neiman's stores have historically been more productive than their Saks counterparts, leaving many to question the future of the less profitable Saks locations.
Saks Global has indicated that the majority of stores in this phase of closures are unprofitable and located in smaller markets with limited growth potential. In four of the nine markets where Saks Global luxury stores are closing, there is another Saks Global store nearby that could potentially absorb the business.
The Future of Luxury Retail
With the closures set for the end of April, and the Fifth Avenue Club styling suites closing on Saturday, the impact on employees and customers is a concern. Saks has stated that these locations represent a small portion of their business, accounting for only a small, single-digit percentage of annual GMV, and were collectively unprofitable.
As for the future, Saks Global aims to streamline its operations, focusing on luxury and full-price selling, and investing more in its remaining locations with enhanced in-store experiences and better assortments.
